Did you design the cover?

No way. My drawing is limited to stick figures and the occasional house and tree.

Did your publisher design the cover?

I signed a contract with Guardian Angel Publishing. They have a group of artists they work with and I was asked to provide three possible artists I would be interested in. I was familiar with Eugene Ruble’s work from other Guardian Angel books, so I was thrilled when he accepted the contract for Little Shepherd.

Did you get to give any input about the cover design?

I provided Eugene with an idea of what I thought would be good for the cover, and he worked with that. It’s exactly what I had imagined.

Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? If so, please share the details.

Eugene and I have never met and we’ve never even spoken by phone. He’s not online, so once I signed my part of the contract, I mailed the contract off to Eugene with potential ideas for the cover art and the interior illustrations.

When the publisher told me she had a galley of the cover ready to send me, I have to admit I didn’t open the email attachment right away. I said a quick prayer because I wasn’t sure what I would do if I wasn’t happy with the cover art.

Who is the cover artist?

Eugene Ruble designed both the cover and the interior illustrations. I’m familiar enough with his work now that I can usually tell he’s illustrated a book without looking at the credit on the front cover. I love it! He took my idea and provided what I never could have in a million years.

What I like best about the cover is that it captures the essence of the entire story. Obed is in the fields with his sheep, the wolves are howling overhead, and the angel is in the background surrounded by a glowing light.

There was a tiny bit of confusion over the title on the cover. The first galley I received showed the title of The Little Shepherd Boy, which was the original title. I went around promoting how my book, The Little Shepherd Boy, would be released in August. Then I noticed that the Guardian Angel website said Little Shepherd. We opted for the shorter title, but it caused bloggers a tiny bit of confusion at the start of my virtual book tour.

Cynthia's Attic: The Magician's Castle

Although I'd like to take credit for this beautiful cover, it was designed by award-winning graphic artist, Nathalie Moore who designed all the covers for my books.

I'm absolutely thrilled with the way it turned out and was asked for my input in advance. The only thing I requested was a mysterious castle. It's better than I even imagined and I love the rich color, too.

I couldn't ask for a better representation of the story, "Cynthia's Attic: The Magician's Castle."

My first book, "Splinters: The Pain, The Passion, The Point" was published in March 2009. The book, as the cover relates (I hope!), is an anthology of stories from my life as a female woodworker.

Did you design the cover? The cover of my book was designed by my publishing company. However, I must admit that the publishing company that published my book is actually owned by my granddaughter. I must say that love for books runs in the family. I write them and she publishes and designs.

Did your publisher design the cover? Yes, though my granddaughter (owner of Paige1Publishing acts as Creative Director on most books, she personally designed my book cover.

Did you get to give any input about the cover design? Yes, we had several extensive discussions about the book cover and the specific angle that I wanted to convey.

Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? If so, please share the details. Just what I've already shared. The book has one an award for design and will be featured in an upcoming Design book by Harper Collins publishing called "The Big Book of Layout and Design" to be released in May of 2010.

Are you happy with the cover? Yes. I love it and have received many compliments on it. I feel it definitely gets the reader's attention.

Inspiration Divine Book Cover

No, Inspiration Divine's cover was designed by Joy Hart.

Did your publisher design the cover?
No, I'm self publishing.

Did you get to give any input about the cover design?
Absolutely, Joy and I collaborated on several potential covers and refined the design to what is the final version. We went through twenty-one revisions until the final cover as ready for publication.

Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? If so, please share the details.
In addition to the book, I conduct Inspiration Workshops that are based on the teachings of Inspiration Divine. Essentially the workshops are an experiential way to explore the concepts put forth in the book. At the end of every workshop, we ask the students to provide us with one word (written on an index card) that represents what the workshop is for them. My cover designer incorporated these words written by the students in their own handwriting into the front cover of the book.

Rather than boldly making these words the focus on the cover, she blended them into the background color of the book. I think this makes for a much more interesting design and provides something to catch the eye of the reader.

Joy also incorporated a lot of symbolism into the cover design:

Inspiration Divine is a Mind, Body Spirit title and the three candles on the front represent the Body, Spirit and Mind.
There are dots above the "i" characters in the word inspiration representing the Body, Spirit and Mind but not above the word divine (indicating that the Body, Spirit and Mind came from God).

I love it! Joy did an excellent job of incorporating the message of Inspiration Divine into the cover design.

The iD logo is an excellent branding element that can tie the book to other promotional tools that I'll use in workshops, on the website and related products.

Is there anything else about your cover that we need to know? Feel free to share.
We spent a lot of time tuning the spine. One thing I noticed is that libraries paste classification stickers on the bottom half of the book before shelving the book. Thus I wanted to make sure that the title of the book on the spine didn't appear on the lower half of the book. Of course, there is no guarantee that future librarians won't plaster a stick on the top but I still think it is worth it.

You'll notice on the back cover that we incorporated a 2-dimensional barcode above the ISBN. While this hasn't become a retail standard, I noticed that more and more smartphones (e.g. iPhone, Google Android, etc.) have 2-D barcode scanning applications built-in and thus this is designed to facilitate referrals from one reader to another.

We broke with tradition and put my first name (Darwin) on the spine rather than my last name (Stephenson). While many traditionalists will balk at this, we felt that my first name was more memorable and ties into the evolutionary theme of the book (e.g. connection to Charles Darwin).

If not, what would you change and why? The primary market is teens and I don’t think the cover is attracting that market.

Tell us what you think is the best part of the cover. The fall leaves. Fall is a strong metaphor for my book; representing change, death, transformation and the actual month the story takes place.

Is there anything else about your cover that we need to know? Feel free to share. The title CROSSING 13 represents the date, October 13, and the age I was, 13-years-old, when my father died from suicide.

Iggy the Iguana by Melissa M Williams

I wanted the cover to show off the personalities of each character in my series, Iggy the Iguana … it's a sneak peak into the diversity of the story. I also love color and eye catching scenes. My favorite covers always came from the front of Disney movies like the Little Mermaid, the Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. It is so much fun to look at a cover and see the story's plot shine through. My illustrator, Kelley Stangele, is a very talented painter, so she uses some of those techniques in her colored illustrations, which is why my book covers always look almost "water color-like". For this type of book … the brighter the better! At events many people will come up to see what Iggy the Iguana is all about when they pass by my huge poster displays of the covers. Mission accomplished!

Yes, I did design the cover, but I did not illustrate or do the graphic art. So much goes into creating a cover. There are so many minor details. As the publisher, I had the freedom to guide the illustrator and graphic designer as they drew and laid down the artwork. I knew how I wanted the characters to look and the meaning behind the cover, so it was very important for me to be hands on, but I knew my limits and had my graphic designers, Sharon Wyatt and Matthew Landry, work their magic too.

I own LongTale Publishing, so yes, with the help of the whole creative team.

Yes, and I did take advice form other professionals and got opinions from children as well.

The first book in the Iggy the Iguana series is all about Iggy changing to a new elementary school, so the main characters were placed on the cover in the playground of the school … which is also where many of the major scenes take place. I find myself continually bringing the outdoors into the covers. I love the beautiful colors of nature.

Yes, but I am a constant motivator for change, so eventually when we do future revisions on the series, I would love to have a different look. That will be in many years, though.

I would want us to redraw a few of the characters, maybe clean of a few things too.

It is soooo colorful, and the characters show off their unique personalities the second you look at them.

The cover for panGasm was an original mixed medium painting by a deceased friend of mine, Michael Abbey. I have self published this book and chose the image myself because it represents the principle of panGasm perfectly. The principle of panGasm introduces the Divine Feminine Principle of Dark Matter, and here She is holding the Earth in her hand. As well, panGasm uses ancient text and pyramid inscriptions to merge modern scientific discovery to validate the Star-Gate of 2012 as the beginning of a New Age. The Mayan Pyramids behind the image of the Dark Mistress represent the time tables demonstrated by pyramids around the world and feature a maze in the forefront as an image indicating mankind's evolutionary progress. The illustration is called Hathor, the Turquoise Lady. Hathor is the goddess of beauty, joy, love, music, dance and bliss. Chapter 8 is about an Egyptian temple called Dendera which is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and provides the reader with support in shifting from fear and obligation to living from joy and purpose. Living from bliss and joy is a key message in the book, so that Hathor blesses the cover of the book is simply divine.

Hello, This is my book cover, a painting by Nicholas Roerich painted in the 1930s. There is a Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York. The web site is: www.roerich.org

I first saw the painting in James Wasserman's book on art and symbols of the occult. It's called "The Mother of the World." I was drawn to it immediately. About a third of the book is about a trip I took to Southern France to follow the Black Madonnas. There are 200 in France alone, 450 in the world. Although this painting is not a Black Madonna, she seemed numinous to me and the 'her" of the title, The Future That Brought Her Here, is the Divine Feminine principle which is returning to the world. This millennium is called The Millennium of Women, and I also think of St. John's reference to The Woman Clothed by the Sun in Revelation, who is in labor, giving birth, I believe to the the "New Earth" as predicted.

The earth is feminine and the ancient goddesses are always related to the earth. She is also me, and my guides, as I was told the some of the spirits around me, whom I become aware of claire-sentiently in the book, are ME from the future. They are helping me with the ascension process, which is the process a lot of humanity is undergoing right now as the species hovers at the edge of evolutionary leap in consciousness. In the first chapter I tell about a spontaneous altered state experience I had and then wrote a poem about in 1984. The poem is called "The Future That Brought Her Here" and relates to the experience I had. It was years later that several psychics told me the figures I saw around me through my third eyes were me from the future. I immediately remembered the poem. If you read the first chapter you'll understand the context. I liked that the memoir title also had several layers of meaning. The poem was published in 1994 by Alice James Books in my poetry collection Where Divinity Begins. FYI here is the poem.

ginger lashes greasy with years,

a death in her retina

where only an absence appears.

and the room slides through its layered history:

I did lobby for this image for the cover and my publisher also liked it. They have their own book designer and she put it together. There is more detail in the painting itself. Nicholas Roerich had a spiritual experience in Tibet or India and he has painted many religious and occult figures, virtually all of the avatars and masters of the White Brotherhood that are, in occult traditions, members of a council of guardians over Earth. Roerich is no longer living.He was Russian though he traveled throughout the world and here's a quote from Wikepedia:

"He created about 7,000 paintings (many of them are exhibited in well-known museums of the world) and about 30 literary works. Roerich is an author and initiator of an international pact for the protection of artistic and academic institutions and historical sites (Roerich’s Pact) and a founder of an international movement for the defence of culture. Roerich earned several nominations for the Nobel Prize."

He was also a writer. Tremendously prolific. There is quite a lot of information on him and his other paintings are also marvelous. I chose the cover mostly for its symbolic significance. The World's Mother is holding her hands facing outward as if to extend healing energy. In the whole painting, which I've attached below, she is surrounded by lights that look like figures, whether angelic, or fairies, or little Buddhas, it's hard to tell. She sits on rock that is floating above sky, but the sky also looks like the ocean, so she is obviously associated with the landscape of the earth. Much of my book has to do with the earth and the power of the ley lines beneath it, what the aborigines call "songlines," which are the power centers that dowsers look for to find springs. Many of the ancient goddess figures were found buried at these "sacred" places over springs.

I am happy with the cover, however, I wonder if it makes the book appear to be too religious. I don't want it to look "Christian," and I wonder if the cover has put off some people from buying it, or even looking at it because of that. It is a memoir, a modern story with research in it and perhaps it doesn't appear to be that at first sight. I guess the best part of it for me is the figure herself and the lovely colors.

Cover Art for Listen to the Songs of the Angels

3) Yes. The finished product is the result of criteria’s I submitted to the graphic artist.

4) The story behind the design.

One Sunday afternoon while visiting a clairvoyant friend, she informed me that soon I would see a bird with a branch in its beak and that it would speak volumes to me once I acknowledged it.

The following Wednesday following a shower, I grabbed a new and unfamiliar towel at random, opened it up, and brought it to my face. Suddenly to my surprise, I noticed a dove with a branch in beak embroidered in the towel. Instantly a clear message came to mind. The dove goes on the cover of your book and the book’s colour will match that of the towel.

I worked with my wonderful illustrator, Cody Frusher. We tried a couple of options before we settled on this one.

Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? If so, please
share the details.
At first we tried using normal text for the title, but we quickly
realized that since the laces were the highlight of the story, it only
made sense to feature them in the title text.

Who is the cover artist?
Cody Frusher, the book's illustrator, also did the cover illustration.

Are you happy with the cover?
I love the cover!

If not, what would you change and why?
Absolutely nothing.

Tell us what you think is the best part of the cover.
The book itself has black and white pen illustrations, and the only
color is Lucas' laces as they tangle around everything he meets. Not
only does the cover hint what the book is about, but by being black
and white with simple line illustrations, I think it really stands out
on the book shelf.

I designed and choose the colors and fabrics for the quilt on the cover of "Night and Day" for one of the guest rooms at my bed and breakfast, The Blue Belle Inn B&B and Tea House in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Each of my rooms is named after a children's story - this one is called "On the Banks of Plum Creek" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It's a log cabin design, and matches the colors of the room, which are blue and plum.

It's their sentimental natures that draw them together on the internet, and keep them apart, since she's in Minnesota and he's in Denmark. I think the warm colors and homespun design of the quilt are eye-catching and perfect for the plot.

I wanted other parents to know that their feelings of hopelessness and despair were natural. That, with time and the proper help, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It may not be what we want as far as justice from our judicial system which also brings it's own heartache of betrayal but there is healing and strength that can be found.

Are you happy with the cover? The original photo I’d chosen showed a more aggressive sensuality that was more fitting to the story overall, but it didn’t quite fit the glass. If not, what would you change and why? One thing I would change is the font of the author name, but that was my doing, my mistake.

I was out of the country when it was time for the cover design work to start, and I was too busy shot gunning bird-sized mosquitoes and getting lost on dirt trails that masqueraded as roads to worry about the fineries of cover art. I gave the artist who did the covers for Sam’s Quest for the Crimson Crystal and for The Devil’s Darning Needle a free hand to design Sam’s Quest: The Royal Trident.

When I returned I looked the concepts over, and though excellent, they weren’t what I wanted. They depicted different parts of the book that I didn’t think told the story. I knew the scene I wanted and started to sketch. Here’s the result. The skills of the cover artist brought it to life.

3) Who is the cover artist?

I did the initial pencil sketch and a friend of mine came out of retirement to do the coloration, etc. She’s a sucker for chocolate covered cherries. Three two-layered boxes got it done. Guess what she gets for Christmas?

4) Are you happy with the cover?

Yes. The book distributor says that it’s in the top five covers he’s handled for the genre. He’s been in business for 30+ years. He’s happy with it and so am I.

5) What is the best part of the cover?

It’s a perfect pictorial synopsis of the book. The scene shows Sam and Patch rowing into Skull Cove, a scary place for sure. Sam has to get through the Skull Rock’s guarded gate to reach shore where she believes the motley mutant thieves are holding her friend, King Kaylan, captive. Daunting, but she keeps her fear in check and points the boat directly toward the danger, not knowing how she will succeed, only that she must.

6) Is there anything else we need to know?

The world could use more Sam’s. She’s not a super hero, she doesn’t jump over tall buildings, but when needed she stands up, shaky at times with a lump in her throat, but stand up she does. I don’t want Sam to magically shed herself of her physical and mental frailties – that’s too easy and would lose one of the key lessons of the story. None of us is perfect. All have fears and insecurities. It’s how we handle life’s challenges that counts. Sam goes through the fire the best she can and comes out the other side a better, stronger person.

I think her style is funky and intriguing, and I love the cover she did for Chesapeake Harvest. It is evocative of the lonely life Mary Charles lives as an indentured servant in a newborn colony. The interesting story is how I found the designer. I had done the same research for designers on this book as I had done for my earlier book, The MoonQuest, but without same unequivocal results. No portfolio I saw, online or off, seemed to capture the essence of this book. Finally, I contracted with a designer who came the closest, crossed my fingers and prayed. She sent three concepts, none of which fully satisfied me but one of which I felt I could work with. After some back-and-forth with her, it became clear that this wasn't going to work and she resigned. Suddenly, I had no designer. A few weeks earlier, however, while I was on Facebook offering feedback on the proposed cover of a friend's book, I came across Richard (see the next question). His was the comment immediately previous to mine. We became online friends and, when I suddenly needed a new designer, I asked him to send me his portfolio. I soon as I saw his work, I knew he was the one. And he sure didn't let me down.

Yes, I did. I took the photo when last in Santiago de Compostela, and when I viewed it I was struck by the mystery it contained. It seems to take you beyond and past the beautiful Portico de Gloria into the mysteries of the Cathedral in Santiago itself. It was the only photo I ever considered. The rest was easy.

Since I self-published with iUniverse, I had full control over the cover design, although I did pay for a "Cover Copy Polish" which I thought, on receipt, took a lot of the strength out of the book and the original copy. I requested that they go with the original cover, which they did.

The first thing a pilgrim sees when they enter the cathedral is Master Matteo's stunning Portico de Gloria, described by some as a "symphony in stone". The Romanesque interior lies inside the Barroque exterior, but in some ways it is far more ornate than the original builders intended. As such, as I have explained, I felt that a mystery was implicit, and the perspective and symmetry of the cover invite the reader to find out more.

The book itself is a "timeshift" of course which looks at a bishop named Priscillian. Decapitated in 385 by the Romans (and with the full encouragement of certain of the Iberian bishops, although some - notable St. Ambrose and St. Martin of Tours were very much against it - were so scandalised that they refused to hold communian with the Roman emperor who allowed it. My claim - and remember it is fictional after all - is that it is Priscillian in the tomb in the cathedral, and not St. James at all. All of this is dovetailed with the story of Miranda, a professor from the University of Toronto, who is walking the Camino to try to regain some self identity.

I designed the original cover concept, which was the single large emerald and two smaller emeralds, lying on a sandy beach. It was my idea to “hide” a skull in the large emerald to denote danger. The actual rendition of the large emerald was created by Jimmie W. Hanes III. I supplied Mr. Hanes with the proper facets for a classic emerald cut. Ms. Cheri Fakes finished the cover art with several additional emeralds, a bag in which to hold the gems, and the gloved hand created to reach for the valuable emeralds.

One benefit of working with a small publisher is that I can be deeply involved in the process. It took seventeen mockups to get it just right. It's my first cover, the first in what will be a mystery series, and so we wanted to set a "series" tone and make this cover as compelling as we could. The publisher had ultimate approval, but liked what author and designer were developing, and gave us our head.

Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? SAY GOODBYE is what I call a crossover: a deep love story folded tightly into a murder mystery. I'm a senior citizen and so is my protagonist. I wanted to convey, at first glance, BOTH romance and danger. That's easier said than done, and I'd gotten advice not to try—I was told either would be enough, two would confuse. But I'm stubborn.

Who is the cover artist? Kandel felt that characters in silhouette would suffice; she offered alternatives, modified to our suggestions and her creativity, and so publisher and author tip our hats to her.

Are you happy with the cover? Extremely. Standing in a row beside other covers, ours pops out. And the second Reluctant Sleuth Mystery, PERFECT COVER (Deadly Ink Press, December, 2008) retains the same lighter-to-darker color value (with a different color), titles font and placement, and graphic location—a recognizable sister.

I gave Berin our standard 150-word brief, picked from a favourite scene. It's worked well in the past, and worked well again.

When the cover came back, I realized that I'd omitted one vital piece of info, and had to hastily get it to him -- which he then corrected. Vengeance is an SF novel featuring a cyborg called a spellhound, which is part human, part based on Great Dane stock, but I never told him that it was a Great Dane!

Plus, we had a choice of colours and fonts for the titles; 'Vengeance' in red in Gothic font looks pretty lurid -- like it's a Hammer Horror Film! We finally settled on what you see.

The cover was done by Berin Auriegas, who did the wonderful cover for my last novel, The Silk Palace.

The main problem we had was with Sinbad's ears. Being part-feline, he has pointed ears like a lynx's. I kept getting this e-mail asking, "What does a lynx look like?" so I did my own sketch of Sinbad and sent it to him. We decided to leave off the moustache because later, he shaves it off.

What she drew looked like a house, not a rough shed built over a spring and used to store dairy products. We were on a tight deadline, and I almost panicked when I saw the art just a couple of days before the cover designer needed the artwork to finish the cover on time. Fortunately, the artist was able to change the drawing in a short time, and the end result is just what I envisioned.

Who is the cover artist? The artist is Kim Downing; the cover designer is Jonathan Gullery.

1. Did you design the cover?

A. I told my designer what I had in mind and she submitted several drawings for us to consider. I am essentially an author .I paint word pictures, but I cannot draw a straight line with a ruler.

2. Did your publisher design the cover?

A. She did the layout after I submitted ideas on what I wanted. In particular, I wanted a picture of Red Leader because the pose was just eye catching. He is the horse with the golden mane mentioned in the cover and as the title of the book.

3. Did you get to give any input about the cover design?

A. Definitely yes. I am always open to suggestions, but because I write in different genres ,I often have to conjure up ideas on what I want the cover to “say”.

4. Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? If so, please share the details.

A. The photograph of Red was taken by my wife, Virginia. She’s not a professional photographer, but she has taken so many pictures of grandchildren she’s darn near a professional. There was only one fly in the ointment. In summer we keep a fly mask on our horses. The best shot of Red that we had was the one on the cover of The Horse with the Golden Mane and we couldn’t see his face because of the fly mask.

We submitted photos of Red’s face to the designer and she painted the face onto the body of Red. She did a passably good job of it too. I don’t mention her name because she’s gone out of business in the sense that she is doing illustrations only.

A. J.M. Williams of Ohio .

6. Are you happy with the cover?

A . Generally yes.

7. If not, what would you change and why?

A. I would have asked her to “mow” the grass in the picture of Red. Virginia snapped the shot spontaneously, never thinking it would be on the cover of the book. Of course I had not mowed the grass recently as is evident from the picture. If the designer could have shortened the grass in the cover picture, it might not be so distracting. But then, The Horse with the Golden Mane is my “baby” and I’m probably being too picky about what she wears.

8. Tell us what you think is the best part of the cover.

A. Red’s striking pose. He’s a very high-strung horse and in the picture he is standing at full alert. I cannot tell you what a thrill – and a fright – it is to be riding him when he comes to full alert and begins to blow. He’s a horse that bolted out from under me, cracked my ribs, broke my collar bone and punctured my lung so I have a deep respect for him. But in that pose, he is just magnificent.

9. Is there anything else about your cover that we need to know? Feel free to share.

A. As I have said repeatedly, covers sell books, so if a prospective writer/marketer spends money on anything, make it the cover design. Most of the people we deal with at book signings and fairs, are attracted by the cover. They look at the cover. It peaks their interest. You say a few words. They turn it over and look at the second most important part of the book . . . the rear cover.

When we started out we put reviews on the rear cover. Looked great and it boosted my ego, but readers form their own opinions and if the rear cover doe not have details about the book that interests them, they gently place it down. (Some of the kids are not so gentle.)

Tears and Tales

A. Yes and No. I had the raw idea of what I wanted. The cover on Tears and Tales depicts a man kneeling by a grave marker. And implies he is mourning his deceased dog. He has a playful pup by his side. But the cover designer Myla Ryk took the idea and transformed it into a painting like cover.

A. Hard to answer that one. Krazy Duck is a small self-publishing press. So in a way the publisher concocted the idea of the cover but the graphic artist did the rest.

I wanted the cover to depict a lonely man mourning his lost dog, his horse in the background, and the new life of an energetic puppy beside the man to show that life goes on. New pets help that process. The scene apparently represents something from Washington state as many people seem to recognize it, but it’s not our farm, which lies in Casey County , Kentucky .

Her name is Myla Ryk. We connected with her through the publisher of our first edition of Tears and Tales. Myla was just wonderful to work with. Her cover should have won an award as did the book itself.

It resembles a painting and many people ask us that. People noticing your book result in sales. If you can cause a person to stop and look, you’ve got a good chance of talking up your book and finding a sale. People ask all kinds of questions about the cover of Tears and Tales. Was it a painting? Is that your farm? Is that Mount Washington ? Mount Rainer? Did the artist live near the mountain? Is that your dog? Is that you on the cover? The fact that it resembles a painting has resulted in so many sales I am embarrassed to say we used another designer on our other books

We moved from a highly metropolitan area in New Jersey where Virginia and I had lived for most of our years. When we met and married it was with the dream that we would both get out of New Jersey . Internally and emotionally, we were farm people, country people. We wanted a quieter way of life. I could write another book on the trials and tribulations of moving from metropolitan New Jersey to a rural area where our nearest neighbor is a half mile away. I had three accidents in the first two years, one of which darn near killed me.

I think it was a combination of the land and the people. When I got hurt, neighbors who hardly knew us brought food or asked what Russ was going to do with that field he plowed. Then, they came and did the work. No pay, just being neighbors. I wanted a cover that depicted my farm as a place where I could be with my animal friends and enjoy the peace and quiet of the country.

Does it exact a price? Sure. Allergies and my asthma have gotten a little worse and I’m always getting an injury of one kind of another, like the time I slipped and fell on my chain saw. The blade just nicked my leg and cut through the pants, but my Guardian Angel yanked it away before it gave me anything more than a superficial slash.

Did you design the cover?

The answer is ‘yes’ and ‘no’. My editor/book designer originally wanted to collage of family photos on the cover. I wanted a photo of my grandfather, Guy T. Viskniskki, since the book was about him. I also wanted the photo of him that I was most familiar with – one from the late 1930s. My husband suggested that I use a photo of Guy in his military uniform from 1917, when he started The Stars and Stripes newspaper. After that I decided that the backdrop for Guy’s photo should be the first edition of the newspaper. I sent both to my cover designer and also told her I liked ‘color’ and maybe we should use red, white and blue to emphasize The Stars and Stripes.

Did your publisher design the cover?

No, I self-publish so I was able to have lots of input into what I wanted on the cover of Unsung Patriot.

Did you get to give any input about the cover design?

Definitely yes, as can be seen in question #1. I don’t think I’d like not having some input.

Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? If so, please share the details.

I never knew my grandfather; I only saw him in photos and the most prominent one was of a bald-headed man in his late 60s. So that is my image of him. However, I have tons of family photos and when I realized that I had one of him in his army uniform from 1917 that seemed to be the photo to use. It certainly dates him and the time period of one third of my book. However, the man on the cover doesn’t look like “my” grandfather to me.

Who is the cover artist?

Janice Phelps Williams laid out the cover design while I provided the photo of my grandfather and The Stars and Stripes. My daughter also helped. I emailed her the original cover design. She felt something was just not right and suggested that the print be changed to an older print that looked more like a typewriter than a computer. It made a big difference. She also made some other suggestions about exactly where Guy’s photo should be in relation to the first page of the newspaper.

Are you happy with the cover?

Yes, I am.

If not, what would you change and why?

Since I am happy with the cover, I wouldn’t change anything. I think having so much input into the design and having my husband and daughter look it over (in case I didn’t notice something) made me feel sure that I had the best cover I could have.

Tell us what you think is the best part of the cover.

I like the way Guy is super-imposed on the front page of the first edition of The Stars and Stripes. Combining that with the red, white and blue motif really makes the book come across as being patriotic. Maybe that’s not such a good thing in this day and age, but I like it.

I think having a number of people look at the original design helps. That way the author doesn’t get caught up in the excitement of seeing a cover. People who are not so involved can give a much more objective opinion – an opinion closer to that of the buying public.

Being a new author, I naively thought I would have some input and I did offer a couple ideas early on. I had a magazine article that showed a woman's face completely made of puzzle pieces. This was the image I had of the Jane character for years. These were curtly accepted by the publisher. What I now realize is that I should have (and will in the future) trust the expertise of a design and marketing team. A lot of new authors probably make the mistake I did and are too bold or demanding in this area. But hey, you live, you learn!

Yes. As you can see, Kam did incorporate some of the original puzzle idea which impressed me immensely. But more than that, the first time I saw the cover, I felt he really understood the story. It's interesting because I don't think I ever had that connection even with my early readers. But here was an artist who read the story (he did, he told me so) and interpreted it artistically. Wonderful!

Tell us what you think is the best part of the cover.

I'm no artist, but I do like covers that make you notice something new and different each time you pick the book up. For example, in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, it took me a while, but one day I held it up to the mirror and could read the script on the cover that was intentionally written backwards Da Vinci-style. That made an impression.

So the more I studied the JANEOLOGY cover, the more I noticed subtle elements. You can see the various DNA strands across the book. The young and the old woman's face and then you see, hey, it's not an old woman. It's a woman from another era. Because JANEOLOGY is a novel-in-stories linking eight of Jane's ancestors, I found the modern/period woman contrast incredible. And then, in the top right, you see a very faint image of Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. The story itself is so layered and the cover reflects that in a way I could never have imagined.

What is the best part of the cover? The shadowy figure in the forefront seems to be 'beckoned' by the classic lighthouse. I like the play of the dark figure against the light cover. This is the first light background cover since my first book, "The Rosary Bride" and I like how it looks on the shelf and in ads.

I open my email on May 1 of this year to a message and image from British artist Courtney Davis. The image is The Chariot card from his sadly out-of-print Celtic Tarot deck. He has sent me a copy so that I can write a caption for an upcoming retrospective of his art.

The card, as I mention on the acknowledgments page of The MoonQuest played a significant role in the book's birth...

It's March 1994. I see The Celtic Tarot in Toronto's Omega Centre bookstore and it so seduces me that I can't not buy it. Days later, I use the deck in a writing class I'm teaching: With eyes closed, each student draws one of the major arcana cards and then, with eyes open to the chosen card, is led through a guided visualization into writing.

Generally when I teach, I don't write. I watch the students and hold space for them.

But this night's group is different. These five women are a subset of a larger University of Toronto class that I have just led through 10 weeks of creative awakening. They don't require my usual overseeing and so, once they're settled into writing, some inner imperative has me draw a card of my own: The Chariot.

That same imperative has me pick up a pen and push it across the blank page. What emerges is the tale of an odd-looking man in an even odder-looking coach that is pulled by two odd-colored horses.

Next morning, I'm drawn back to the story. I add to it. I keep adding to it daily, almost obsessively. And a year later in Amirault's Hill, Nova Scotia, on the anniversary of that Toronto class, I complete my first draft of The MoonQuest.

When I see The Chariot again for the first time in a decade, I'm startled. Even though the cover designer never saw the tarot card and knows nothing of The Celtic Tarot or how it inspired me, there's a definite connection between the two.

Today, many drafts and many years later, the manuscript is a book. And although the book's opening has changed and the odd-looking man has been superseded in importance by other characters, The Chariot's inspiration is still evident throughout The MoonQuest.

My cover for "Murder @ Work" (Echelon Press 2004) was commissioned by the publisher and designed by Nathalie Moore. And yes, I had the opportunity to give input. I remember requesting "a minimalist cover with no realistic dead bodies". There is nothing more off-putting than a young beauty lying in a pool of blood, particularly if the book in question is marketed as a cosy read.

Because the setting of my book is an important element, I also wanted the cover to shout "South Africa" with all its implications, but without too many political overtones. After all, my book is a murder mystery, not a treaty about power struggles. I didn't design the cover.

My publisher hired a designer and photographer.

I didn't have any input on the design.

Not really any interesting story. The photograph is the photographer's first published photo. He self-photographed his feet with a extension shutter control. He said it's really embarrassing stuff and he'll only do it when he's alone.

Cover designer is Kevin Greenblat of Austin, TX.

Photographer is Matthew Fraser of Clarksville, AR.

Yes, I'm happy with the cover. The original self-published book had a picture of me and my family on the front cover, but honestly, I looked like I had just seen a ghost, so I'm pleased with this change.

One thing I wonder about this cover is if it holds enough to keep the attention of the browser. Seems too simple.

I love the river rocks and the lace treatment around the title. The designer created that for this book and he calls it Andean lace, which is fitting because my book is about life in the Andes Mountains.

Although POINT SURRENDER takes place in a fictional California lighthouse, the structure in the story is patterned after Heceta Head Lighthouse in Florence, Oregon. I gave sample photos of Heceta Head to the cover artist, and the publisher decided to purchase the rights to the best one.

Yes. Actually, the son of the publisher, Dirk A. Wolf, designed the cover.

Yes--I requested an image of the Dead Sea region, since that figures heavily in my story, plus a fragment of an ancient manuscript and the sort of pottery jar the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in (although my "codex" is actually the earliest book form rather than a scroll).

I spent my Junior Year in Israel in the early 1970s and spent a night illegally on the top of Masada, the famous site of the Jewish last stand against the Romans. This spectacular site is located in the same Dead Sea region as my story. The desert landscape made a deep impression on me.

It wouldn’t be too much of an exaggeration to say that the cover almost designed itself. My publisher and I were talking generally about cover artists, and I had long been a huge fan of Duncan Long’s (I hadn’t realized for just how long until I looked at the date on the gallery; barely a month after Strange Horizons started, and over seven years ago now…) so when Dindy asked if there was anyone I wanted included in the bidding process, I named him.

When the sample cover turned up – and we hadn’t given any briefing to any of the four artists, just asked for samples of their work – it was spooky; the cover was almost exactly what I’d been visualizing in a very vague sort of way.

So we told Duncan some of the key points of the book, and he changed one of the skulls to a Neanderthal shape, while keeping the other as Homo Sapiens. The star got changed to a portal. OK, so it looks like the wormhole from DS9, but how would you go about representing a rent in the fabric of space-time? Finally, Duncan included some lightning and some James-Bond-type people to represent the hero and heroine, and hey presto! one cover.

Very! I forget how much I liked it, until I sat down and looked at it again. That’s the thing about the familiar; it loses its impact until you look at it anew.

I was asked to provide a scene I thought would be appropriate for the cover of Sinbad's Last Voyage. I decided on a scene near the end of the book where Sinbad and Andrea are on the edge of a cliff, surrounded by Albegensi warriors who are firing at them with lasers.Did you design the cover?

I had to give him a physical description of the scene, and the two characters--how the cliff-edge was covered with boulders, what Andi and Sin looked like, their clothing, weapons, etc.Is there an interesting story behind the cover design? If so, please share the details.

The main problem we had was with Sinbad's ears. Being part-feline, he has pointed ears like a lynx's. I kept getting this e-mail asking, "What does a lynx look like?" so I did my own sketch of Sinbad and sent it to him. We decided to leave off the moustache because later, he shaves it off.
